The Office of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has held a press conference on its plan to host Bangkok Sister Cities Week 2012: Urban Rehabilitation & Renewal.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Dr. Wanlop Suwannadee said the event will be held, during which mayors from 18 cities around the world are going to brainstorm on how to handle future disasters. Ideas and opinions will be incorporated into a plan that will also help Bangkok raise confidence in the world community.

Dr. Wanlop added that the BMA will also focus on protecting the environment and reducing pollutions. The BMA will increase foreign language classes in schools as a means to enhance cultural exchange and promote tourism. Meanwhile, the event will also include discussions on city planning, which, according to Dr. Wanlop, will be beneficial to Bangkok given the development plan for the capital city is still on the drawing board.

People are encouraged to be part of this grand event by visiting Benjasiri Park, which is near Sukhumvit soi 24. There will be exhibits on the history of each of the 18 participating cities from 13 different countries, with small gardens representing them. The 18 participating cities consist of Washington DC, Beijing, Kwangchow, Chongching, Taechew, Budapest, Brisbane, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Manila, Jakarta, Hanoi, Viengchan, Astana, Fukuoka, Seoul, Busan and Lausanne
