Costa dos Murmurios (The Murmuring Coast ), Portugal
Director : Margarida Cardoso

Screening Courtesy: Embassy of Portugal, which will provide wine and snacks

Based on a novel by acclaimed Portuguese writer Lidia Jorge, ‘The Murmuring Coast’ is the first feature film of well-known screenplay writer Margarido Cardoso. It is an exotic, complex, disturbing story set in Mozambique during Portugal’s colonial rule there.

Evita is a girl in love who leaves Lisbon to join her fiancé Luis in Mozambique and get married to him.

But it does not take the bride long to realise that his new environment has changed her husband, more so because he spends most of his time with his boss Jaime, who has little regard for anyone, whether it’s his wife, colleagues, or the locals. It’s when the two men go off on a military assignment, that Evita interacts with Jaime’s bitter wife Helena, and learns many secrets. She herself is disturbed by suspicious poisonings and killings. While trying to expose them, she is surprised by the falling ethics of the journalists, but has an affair with one. That is not good for her marriage, when her husband returns.

The film is lush and languorous, drawing us into the complex dark side of life in Mozambique in the 1960s, a time of incipient violence, racism and sexism.

The arresting photography of well-known Lisa Hagstrand and evocative music of Baernardo Sassetti, add to the brooding atmospherics.

We present an important film to mark the 500th Anniversary of relations between Portugal and Thailand, and the Ambassador of Portugal HE Dr Jorge Torres-Pereira, will serve scintillating Portuguese wine and snacks, to mark the event.

Don’t miss yet another unforgettable movie, in our Contemporary World Film Series.
